From the bustling atmosphere of the rink to the serene nature of Hachinohe, Japan’s rich cultural heritage gave me time to immerse myself in its timeless traditions. One of my most memorable adventures was the day we visited a local temple, a sanctuary of tranquility amidst the urban hustle and bustle. We learned about the Yawata-uma horse, a revered symbol of strength and resilience in Japanese folklore. From the mythical tales of its legendary origins to its enduring presence in local festivals and rituals, the Yawata-uma captivated my imagination and offered a glimpse into the profound bond between humans and animals in Japanese culture.
Speedskating at the Junior Worlds in Japan was an experience like no other. I was used to the thrill of racing internationally because I had just come from Korea, but the atmosphere excited me nonetheless. Racing against competitors from around the world gives me an adrenaline burst every time, but racing is not just about the competition – it is about the camaraderie and shared passion for the sport that brought us all together.
While we may be competitors on the ice, there are moments of laughter and camaraderie, like the impromptu snowball fight with my teammates, or coffee with other skaters. As the fluffy snowflakes came down around us, we let go of the stress of the competition, and forged bonds that would last long after the final races had been skated.
Beyond the rink, I had the chance to connect with skaters from other countries, each one bringing their own unique story and perspective to the table. Whether we were playing cards or clumsily trying to communicate through google translate, there was a sense of kinship that transcended borders and languages. while I loved being in Japan, the experience of bidding farewell to my older teammates who were aging out of the junior age group was bittersweet. It is hard to go from spending every day with a group to not seeing them for months. While saddened by the fact that I wouldn’t see them for while, I was filled with gratitude for the memories we had shared and the lessons they had imparted, both on and off the ice in the Land of the Rising Sun.
